You take a size 7 tracheal tube and pass it down the patient's right nostril. You listen for breath sounds from the trachea as you advance the tube. You can't hear too much over the noise of the traffic, and the patient's respiration is pretty shallow. Suddenly the breath sounds get much louder and you easily pass the tube into the trachea.
