The Trauma Fellow must: have a genuine interest in maintaining the highest standards in trauma care; demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communicative skills, have the ability to work as a team member as well as to take on leadership and supervisory roles in all facets of trauma management. Attends Trauma Team activations during working hours, ensuring that the patient progresses to definitive care in an efficient timely fashion. Get actively involved in the surgical management. Assisted by the Trauma Coordinator, performs daily rounds of all new trauma patients, reviewing clinical progresses, diagnostic imaging, and discussing the overall management plan at a consultant level. Assisted by the Trauma Coordinator, performs daily rounds of all trauma patients in ICU and HDU, reviewing clinical progresses, diagnostic imaging, and the overall therapeutic plan. Communicates with surgical and intensivist consultants. Participates in the after hours on call emergency surgical roster. Attends weekly multidisciplinary rounds. Key Accountabilities : Organises weekly multidisciplinary education session (Multidisciplinary Trauma Forum). Implements regular orientation programs for interns, residents and registrars in basic trauma management, trauma team roles and current hospital trauma protocols. Plans and participates in educational activities with medical, nursing and paramedical staff. Participates in an organised teaching program with networked hospitals. Identifies and reviews system problems in the hospital on a weekly basis with the Trauma Director, Trauma Deputy Director, and the Trauma Coordinator. Attends monthly Trauma Death Audits. Works with the Trauma Director, Trauma Deputy Director, and Trauma Coordinator to analyse data and identify trends that need evaluation. Participates in clinical research in trauma related areas, develops a good working knowledge of trauma scoring systems. Mentored and supervised by the Trauma Director and Deputy Director, presents on national and international trauma conferences and publishes in peer-reviewed journals. Coordinates relevant research with registrars, residents and interns acting in an advisory/mentor capacity. Collates and reviews relevant journal articles. Participates and presents interesting articles at the weekly Journal Club. Responsible for organising monthly morbidity and mortality audit. Participates in the development of trauma policies. Attends and contributes to the Trauma Committee. Participates in the development of the hospital’s trauma manual. Responsible for feedback to regional and urban trauma centres regarding the management of trauma patients. Challenges/Problem Solving : Major challenges: - work in the multidisciplinary stimulating environment of the busiest Trauma Centre in NSW. - be part of a developing Trauma System with clinical educational and research responsibilities. Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) is the provincial lead level 1 trauma centre for BC and is recruiting a qualified general surgeon with trauma fellowship training and three to five years post fellowship experience in trauma surgery. This is a University of British Columbia affiliated position with an academic appointment commensurate with training and academic record.
VGH admits over 2000 trauma patients a year (650 ISS>15), and has a busy acute care general surgery service. It is also the provincial referral centre for major burns and spinal cord injury.
The candidate is expected to have strong clinical skills in trauma and acute care surgery, an academic commitment to include teaching and research, along with an interest in administrative leadership. Potential opportunities exist in elective general surgical practice and critical care for the appropriately qualified candidate.
Eligibility for certification by the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons and Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (General Surgery) or equivalent are prerequisites. Applications by July 1, 2012.
