FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
The Unit
John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, Australia, is a Level 1 Trauma Centre. It is the principal referral center, teaching hospital and a community hospital for Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and beyond. It is the only trauma center in New South Wales outside Sydney and has the busiest emergency department in the state. It serves a population of 840,000 with an average of 400 major trauma admissions/year (ISS>15). A well established helicopter retrieval service is just off campus.

Clinical Responsibilities
The chief role of the Trauma Fellow is to facilitate the day-to-day management of the seriously ill trauma patient from resuscitation to rehabilitation.
Attends Trauma Team activations during working hours, ensuring that the patient progresses to definitive care in an efficient timely fashion, and gets actively involved in both resuscitative and surgical management.

Performs daily rounds of all the new trauma patients and all trauma patients in ICU and HDU with the Trauma Coordinator, reviewing clinical progresses, and diagnostic imaging and discussing the overall management plan at a consultant level.
Communicates with specialty consultants, Trauma Director and Deputy Director.
Participates in the after hours on call emergency surgical roster.
Teaching Responsibilities
Organises weekly multidisciplinary education session (Multidisciplinary Trauma Forum).

Implements regular orientation programs for interns, residents and registrars (both at the John Hunter Hospital and the Area) in basic trauma management, trauma team roles and current hospital trauma protocols.
Works with the Trauma Director, Trauma Deputy Director, and Trauma Coordinator to analyse data and identify trends that need evaluation.

Research Responsibilities
Participates in clinical research in trauma related areas, develops a good working knowledge of trauma scoring systems and mentored and supervised by the Trauma Director and Deputy Director, presents on national and international trauma conferences and publishes in peer-reviewed journals.
Applicant Requirements
Medical degree registrable in New South Wales.
Complete training in General Surgery, Orthopaedics or Traumatology.
ATLS/EMST trained, preferably instructor status.
Experience in trauma teaching.
Clinical research.
Previous publications (peer reviewed journals).
English proficiency (IELTS Academic Module; minimum score of 7 in each component)
Salary
Fellowship/ Registrar level - subject to NSW award and applicant qualifications

The Trauma Center at Jersey Shore University Medical Center is recruiting a sixth Trauma/Critical Care Surgeon, to cover our expanding Trauma and Critical Care practice. The individual will also participate in the General Surgery emergency call schedule. The candidate must be board certified or eligible in general surgery as well as surgical critical care. Jersey Shore University Medical Center is a state and ACS certified Level II Trauma Center serving the growing population of Monmouth and Ocean Counties in New Jersey. This is a full-time position with strong hospital support, guaranteed salary, malpractice, vacation, and conference time. Strong teamwork skills are essential.

The Alfred’s Trauma Service is the largest in Australasia, with approximately 5,000 trauma inpatient admissions per year including 1,100 major trauma patients per year or 2-3 major trauma patients per day. The Trauma Centre now receives almost 50% of Victoria’s major trauma patients. In addition to this, The Alfred manages a further 4,500 moderate/minor trauma patients, largely comprised of single limb or single organ injury.

The Alfred features a helipad and Australia’s largest Intensive Care Unit, expanding further to a 45 bed unit in November 2008. Specific trauma wards, with immediate access to multi-disciplinary surgical expert service in trauma are available throughout the hospital.

In this role you will preferably be a General Surgeon, with substantial experience in the treatment and management of patients with a traumatic injury, preferably fulltime and be responsible for the strong and effective leadership, strategic direction and management of the Trauma Service and for leading teaching and research in this area. Supported by a full-time Trauma Program Manager and Trauma Registry staff you will ensure the provision of timely data for clinical care, audit, education and research activity.

The successful applicant may be appointed also as a professor (or associate professor) in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Monash University, if his or her qualifications and experience are in accordance with the academic requirements.

An attractive salary package will be negotiated with the successful candidate. The appointment will be for 5 years in the first instance.
