640 bed hospital, with 3,000 trauma admissions per year (80% blunt, 20%penetrating).
Fellowship Program
Clinical Responsibilities
First year of the fellowship is a one year RRC accredited residency in Surgical Critical Care. Th second year fellow is a member of the faculty of the Department of Surgery with the rank of Instructor. He/she takes attending call one night per week and one weekend each month, supervising resident in the initial assessment, management (operative and non-operative) and post-operative care of patients admitted on his/her call nights. The second year fellow also attends in the SICU in blocks of 5 to 7 days each month.
Research Opportunities
The fellow is strongly encouraged to attend meetings of importance within the trauma/critical care community. These meetings include, but are not limited to, EAST, WTA, SCCM and AAST. The program financially supports any meeting where a paper is presented, the Chicago Board Review Course and Management for physicians and senior health care providers (Vanderbilt School of Medicine).
There are large trauma and ICU databases which allow the opportunity to participate in retrospective reviews of a variety of topics. Opportunities also exist to participate in prospective clinical studies, both within Vanderbilt and in multi-institutional investigations. Opportunities also exist for basic science research and collaboration with other departments.
