The Unit
Description
The fellowship will take place at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals. This is the major Level One Trauma Center for central Virginia, with 2,700 admissions per year through the trauma emergency room. Of these 2,700 admissions, approximately 300 have injury severity scores greater than 17. A multi disciplinary approach is utilized, and all support services are available.
Fellowship Program
Clinical Responsibilities
Instruction at this institution will offer the Orthopedic Trauma Fellow general experience in modern orthopaedic traumatology. A particular emphasis will be placed on the use of advanced surgical techniques necessary for the successful management of complex fractures with soft tissue injury which are encountered in the multiple injured patient. The fellow will participate at the junior attending physician level, and assume responsibilities for decision making and patient care.
Research Opportunities
Completion of at least one research project suitable for publication is expected. A biomechanics laboratory is available for basic science research.
Teaching Responsibilities
Supervision of residents in the operating room and clinics, and assume an active teaching role.
