The Unit
Description
Vanderbilt University Medical Center is a Level I Trauma Center that sees a preponderance of blunt trauma.
Fellowship Program
Clinical Responsibilities
This fellowship is designed to offer comprehensive exposure to the entire spectrum of musculoskeletal trauma. Distinct emphasis will be placed on the care of the multiple injured patient by providing an opportunity to work as part of a team in treating polytrauma patients with multiple organ systems problems. Vanderbilt University Medical Center is a Level I Trauma Center that sees a preponderance of blunt trauma. The Fellow will participate in decision making and operative management of patients with severe multi-system trauma utilizing techniques of internal and external fixation. Particular emphasis will be placed on the operative and non-operative management of acetabular and pelvis fractures. Broad exposure to closed intramedullary nailing techniques will be provided. Exposure to spine trauma, techniques of post-traumatic reconstruction, and rehabilitation will be provided as well. Priority for fellowships will be given to applicants who are committed to academic orthopaedics.
Research Opportunities
In addition to clinical responsibilities, the Fellow will be expected to perform independent clinical or basic science research which will result in at least one paper of sufficient quality to be presented at a national meeting and submitted for publication.
Teaching Responsibilities
The Fellow will be appointed as an instructor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and as such will be responsible for resident and medical student instruction.
