Fellowship Program
Clinical Responsibilities
Surgical Critical Care areas at Parkland Memorial. These areas include the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Neruosurgical ICU, Cardiothoracic ICU, Burn ICU and Paediatric Trauma ICU. The fellow will be directly supervised by faculty in all the surgical intensive care units. The fello and the SICU service provides consultant services to all general surgery patients in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and provide primary care for all subspecialty service patients in the SICU.
A minimum of 9 months is on ICU rotations. The fellow will be primarily responsible for a minimum of 500 patients during his/her fellowship while under the direction of the clinical faculty. The fellow will participate in administrative functions associated with intensive care units, including quality assurance, bed allocation and resource utilization. Emphasis is on clinical care. Essentially a non-operative experience although some surgical procedures required during the care of critically ill patients will be the responsibility of the fellow and the SICU service. Upon completion of the fellowship the fellow should have succint knowledge of cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology and pathophysiology, ventilatory care and cardiovascular monitoring and interpretation. The fellow should be competent in the management of multisystem trauma patients, recognition and treatment of major post-operative problems in surgical patients and an appreciation of the critical care management of specialty patients including neurosurgical, cardiothoracic and pediatric.
