700+ bed University Hospital with 1,200 trauma admissions per year (90% blunt, 10% penetrating)

Research Activities

The research opportunities include a basic laboratory with active research in the fields of sepsis, organ failure, and burn infection. The fellow may chose to become involved with CIREN (Crash Injury Research & Engineering Network) and UMPIRE (University of Michigan Program for Injury Research and Education) in the field of automotive crash investigation and biomechanics. Numerous clinical research projects are also available as are opportunities to participate in divisional administration and accounting.

Fellowship Program

Clinical Responsibilities

Our program is designed to be a two-year fellowship in Trauma, Burn, Emergency General Surgery and Critical Care. There is an emphasis on both clinical and basic research opportunities. The trauma fellow will function primarily as a junior attending working as an integral part of the trauma team. Senior attending surgeon supervision is available at all times for both the fellow and resident staff. There are approximately 4-6 nights of call per month with significant segments of time blocked out for academic pursuits. There is an opportunity to work both with the Trauma Burn ICU team and the Surgical ICU team. Clinical experiences are vast with advanced ICU monitoring, ECMO, administrative duties, and multidisciplinary team rounds.

Teaching Responsibilities

The trauma fellow will be involved in the teaching and supervision of residents and medical students. Weekly ICU conferences will provide an opportunity for problem based and didactic teaching. The fellow will also become involved with the ATLS course instruction.
