The Unit
Description
Grady Memorial Hospital is a tertiary care facility and the largest hospital
in Georgia with 1024 beds. As a partially taxpayer-supported facility for
Indigent patients in Fulton and De Kalb counties, it is also the only hospital
in an eight county area that functions as a Level I trauma center. Grady
admits nearly 50,000 patients per year, including 3400 trauma patients,
70% of whom have penetrating injuries. The state’s regionalized burn
center is housed at Grady and provides comprehensive, acute and
non-acute care for burn victims. The hospital has just completed an
extensive renovation costing 318 million. The new operating rooms,
surgical intensive care unit (SICU), neurosurgical intensive care
unit(NICU), step-down unit opened in April, 1994.
Fellowship Program
Clinical Responsibilities
Although specifically tailored to the fellow’s goals, each fellowship meets the objectives endorsed by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. Due to the large volume and high percentage of patients with penetrating injuries, the fellowship provides superb operative experience, so that each fellow is competent in all surgical aspects of trauma.
Research Opportunities
Opportunities exist for both clinical and basic science researchsoith the assistance of a full-time research director. A Master in Public Health degree from Emory University can be obtained during the fellowship period with opportunity for research in injury prevention.
