Research Activities

Numerous ongoing prospective studies in clinical setting. Basic laboratory
programs established in cellular metabolism and nutrition, immunologic
impact of injury, bacterial translocations, and sepsis.

Fellowship Program

Clinical Responsibilities

The fellowship in trauma at the Southern New Jersey Regional Trauma Center is a one-year program listed with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and with the AAST. The goals of the program are to provide the Fellow with a coherent understanding of and clinical experience in all aspects of trauma care in an academic setting. These include ensuring the Fellow will be able to:
1. Confidently resuscitate and accurately diagnosis the trauma victim in the Emergency Department setting.
2. Intervene surgically when necessary after indicated diagnostic studies are performed or to coordinate the operative procedures to be performed by various subspecialty consultants, including orthopedics, neurosurgery, and OB/GYN.
3. Manage the patients throughout their stay in the acute care facility (including the intensive care unit) as well as to coordinate the early institution of rehabilitation and eventual transfer to long term facility if necessary.
4. To understand the current critical issues being debated regarding pre-hospital care anddelivery systems - EMT’s, MICU’s, and air ambulance.
5. Develop, implement, and maintain a Trauma Registry and gain experience in utilizing the registry in performance of retrospective clinical studies.
6. Design and institute prospective clinical studies, as well as participate in ongoing basic science research if desired.
7. To teach and supervise the surgical residents and medical students assigned to the Trauma Service.
8. Contribute to the organization of monthly Trauma Rounds and conferences.
