September 2008:

The British Association of Immediate Care (BASICS). International Prehospital Care Conference 2008

West Midlands, United Kingdom

September 26, 2008 - September 28, 2008

"The team is the theme”

This year’s conference concentrates on the team approach required for the safe, competent and effective delivery of prehospital immediate care. The first 1½ days are a selection of lectures, discussions and debates on this topic and include presentations from multi-disciplinary members such as medical students, nurses, doctors, fire and police officers. Topics comprise how to build, train and assess an effective team, examples of innovative medical systems in the UK, lessons in teamwork from other emergency services applicable to the immediate care practitioner and opinions of what the immediate care practitioner should bring to an incident and whether this is achieved.

There are numerous reports from actual incidents from the people involved, highlighting the problems and successes on scene for the team. Additionally, the other aspects of being a rescue team are considered, including lessons from the Hull drowning incident during the UK 2007 floods, dealing with injured colleagues, the involvement of the coroner and the psychological impact of being a rescuer.

Small group plenary sessions will allow delegates to learn practical skills, participate in an international Webinar regarding emergency responding using ‘blues and twos’, learn about the prehospital implications of the Mental Capacity Act, see Volvo’s demonstration vehicle with cut-a-ways revealing developments within the modern vehicle of note to the rescue services and more besides.

A thought provoking Haywood memorial lecture on Saturday evening will be delivered by Dr Tom Clarke, Chair of the Joint Royal Colleges Ambulance Liaison Committee (JRCALC).

The final ½ day includes lectures from international speakers on topics including the ethics of dealing with mass casualties and the development of MERIT teams in the UK.

This conference promises to be a provocative look at immediate care in an era of increasing demands to demonstrate the robustness of the prehospital team.

13 CPD points are available for the conference.
