I don't know, a nice big turban keeps the rig clean as the person bleeds to death from the temporal artery injury. William J. Bromberg, MD, FACS Associate Professor of Surgery Mercer University School of Medicine Savannah Surgical Group 912 350-7412 >>> "Gross, Ronald" <Ronald.Gross at baystatehealth.org> 2/15/2012 3:48 PM >>> "the optimal choice of gauze to control the typical major traumatic bleed" IS NO GAUZE, but rather a digit on the arterial bleed, or just above the bleeding site. Gauze serves no purpose other than to give one a false sense of security that the bleeding is controlled 'cause you can't see it........until all of a sudden the gauze is saturated and bleeds like stink! Ron -----Original Message----- From: trauma-list-bounces at trauma.org [mailto:trauma-list-bounces at trauma.org] On Behalf Of Brandon Oto Sent: Monday, February 13, 2012 9:47 PM To: Trauma-List [TRAUMA.ORG] Subject: Gauze dressings Hi all, There's a heated debate between a couple of our paramedics about the optimal choice of gauze to control the typical major traumatic bleed. One likes to pile on the woven 4x4-style pads -- he feels the rough weave gives better texture for clotting, and the thin material allows more direct pressure to be applied. The other likes the filled abd-style pads because they absorb more. First guy says that's the problem, they wick the blood rather than controlling it. Second guy says that's the point, you pull out more fluid to concentrate clotting at the site. At least one disinterested party has concluded that everyone should be starting with a woven layer and then throwing an absorbent pad over that. Things have gone downhill from there. Anyone have any opinions on this? Theory, anecdote, evidence, we'll take it all.
