First, do ALL admitted Trauma patients get an outpatient Trauma clinic follow up appointment on discharge, regardless of their injuries +/- operation? *No, that would be a tremendous waste of our (Trauma Service) resources and of the patients' time. Only the ones that require follow-up by the Trauma Clinic come to Trauma Clinic. Many will still follow-up in Orthopedics outpatient clinic, or in Maxillofacial outpatient clinic, or Neurosurgery. All clinics have very good communication among themselves, so if a patient in the Ortho clinic is deemed by the orthopods to require a visit with us, they'll send him/her right over and call us to let us know. We have not seen any problems with neglected injuries using this basic system.* Second, when do you routinely see those patients being followed? (eg. within 1 week, 1 - 2 weeks, 2 - 4 weeks) *Totally depends on their injuries and/or problems. Initial follow-up visit is universally scheduled for within the week. Chronic patients may only need follow-up more infrequently. * And lastly, what percentage would you say of those patients given a follow up appointment actually show up for it? *>95%. The few who don't get three telephone calls and a letter.* * * *Caesar M Ursic, MD, FACS* *The Queen's Medical Center* *Honolulu, Hawaii*
