Dear List Members

Sorry to distract you all from the nuances of US immigration policy. I'm
wondering about your opinions of trauma surgery as a career outside of the
USA.

I'm currently an intern, and will be starting my surgical SHO training in a
few weeks. I completed an undergraduate elective in trauma surgery in South
Africa a few years ago and really enjoyed it. With it's mix of critically
ill patients, time sensitive interventions and generally good outcomes it
seemed like a great speciality, and one I'd be very keen to pursue. However
I live in Ireland, and trauma surgery is not a developed speciality here,
nor, from what I can see, is it likely to be. The best one could hope for
would be to do general surgery with a trauma interest.

I know there's been a lot of talk in the past few years in the US of the
development of trauma and acute care surgery, but am uncertain of how the
land lies over on this side of the pond. Do you think one could be a 'trauma
surgeon' per se in Ireland or the UK? The NCEPOD Trauma report a few years
back would suggest that this is an area in which outcomes could be improved
- would this have any bearing on the development of trauma surgery as a
subspeciality?

I'm looking forward to hearing your insights.

Regards,

Ryan
