Norman: It would be appropriate for you to describe in professional
terms, just what you did in your hospital for both urine, and for sanitation
regarding bowel movements . Most of the world does not know the tricks you
used.

Oh I would add one thing to Ken's list. Sanitation- prepare for human
waste disposal. Your usual systems will be compromised, most likely

Dr. Al-Harthy:

1. Have your hospital as empty as possible
2. DO NOT let your hospital be a shelter for dependents, pets, or off
duty doctors
3. For the time of the storms projected hit, do not have a lot of
doctors, nurses, etc IN THE HOSPITAL. The hospital ER will be very
quiet for
12 hours after the storm and 12 hours before the storm hits.

4. CANCEL elective surgery until all is clear post storm
5. Have control of all entrances to the hospital and let only
essential
people in
6. Have a dual level triage. Walking wounded do NOT come into the
hospital. Take care of them in an outside clinic. Re Triage those on
stretchers inside.
7. Remember the 10% rule
8. Use the internet. We all will be here for advice
9. Take care of your family by moving them inland and have 3-5 days
supply of food and water, just as if they were taking a family trip to
the
desert
10. ASSUME that your electricity will be OFF for 14 days. Be
careful of food in refrigerators and freezers. Use such perishable
food ASAP
11. Remember that the hospital dislaster response is DIFFERENT from the
government and public health and shelter needs. KEEP THEM SEPARATE,
but
do have a hospital Incident Command.

Do tell my friend Dr. Lampki (Chair of Radiology) hello for me and

Good Luck.

Keep us informed as to your management, your needs, and what you learn.

So back here in Oman, we are bracing our selves as tropical Cyclone Phet
is heading toward the coast of Oman and is expected to make landfall on
tonight.
Phet, a Category 4 storm with winds of over 130 miles (210 km) per hour,
was forecast to weaken before hitting Oman's southeast coast, according
to
storm risk forecasts shown on website www.tropicalstormrisk.com.
NASA's Terra satellite imagery of the storm from earlier today also
revealed an eye in the storm, confirming the intensification. Residents
of
coastal Oman are bracing for strong winds, heavy rainfall and rough surf
today
and tomorrow.
Oman state television said the government had ordered police and the air
force to evacuate people from areas of eastern Oman, where waves were 8
meters (26 feet) high.
National carrier Oman Air said it had canceled two flights so that
aircraft could evacuate people from Masirah island off the east coast.
A previous cyclone in 2007 killed at least 54 people in Oman and Iran.
I would appreciate any advice from the list members with regards to
communication options during natural disasters. With the last cyclone,
Cell phone
services were generally disrupted. Satellite phone, even though available
were troublesome too. I seem to remember that for some reason SMS were
functional though.
Any advice will be of help, and keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
