Of six local community hospitals 400, 750,1000,750,1000,750-1000 per night respectively. Minimal trauma. Same companies pay 2k for in house trauma elsewhere. Supply and demand ,volume and competition and proving time holding a beeper is like being a fireman waiting for the call...it is not benign and many consults/operations go unpaid and may come with it days/weeks of following patients that do not pay and will sue you and the hospital NEEDS general surgeons to exist and have an ER by law in th US. They need us to exist and make exponentially more then us per patient. Surgeons should not ignore this bargaining chip for er call pay or get lowballed by locums firms who take half plus your billing.dn

Ken

I know this is not the USA, but the situation in South Africa is very simple:
Those of us in public hospital service are paid a "communted overtime" for
between 12 and 20 hours per week (depending on your level of seniority)
and this is a fixed amount, whether in-house, on call at home or if called
in. It also is capped - so we don't get more if we work more!

Those in private sector only get paid when they actually work - as they
bill individually seperate to the hospital, they are not paid by the
hospital - in fact it is illegal in SA law to pay drs a retainer - this is
considered as a perverse incentive by our regulatory council (HPCSA) and
can result in fines and deregistration.

At least you canget paid a retainer or per hour!
