Pardon, I forgot the international flavor of the list.

Medical students in the US who are doing clinical rotations here in the US
are often called "Externs" rather than Sub-Interns. The explanation given
is that they are 'external staffing' for the hospital, rather than 'internal
 staff.'

The Scut Monkey's Handbook (officially, "The Clinician's Pocket Handbook")
was developed in the 1978 time frame for the new clinical students of the
University of Kentucky medical center, by a group of senior medical
students. Leonard Gomella has been the editor for some time now. I've lost my
original copy (IIRC, 3rd ed, 1985 time frame), but picked up a copy in 1995
(the 1993 7th edition) when I was teaching residents, so that I could show
them quick and dirty (but useful) references to order sets, etc. Chapters 1
(History and Physical) and 2 (Chart work) cover much of the material needed
for a case presentation to an attending/fellow by a medical student, or
intern. (figuring that by the time one has survived to be a junior resident (PG
II year), one has both memorized the principles AND is no longer hampered
by sleep deprivation...)

It is now available both in hard copy and PDA/smart phone formats at
http://www.trauma.org/index.php/community/list/url/http:list.ftech.net/pipermail/trauma-list/2009-September/_http://www.usbmis.com/scutmonkey/_ (http://www.usbmis.com/scutmonkey/)

The general conception is described in the 7th edition by Dr. Gomella as "a
 manual of manuals."
