Twitter for Trauma!

Some of the more observant of you may have noticed we've started a
TRAUMA.ORG Twitter stream. You can follow this or tag your own posts
by using #traumaorg.

OK that's the bit for those of you who understand Twitter. For those
of you who don't here are two explanations:

1. EXPLANATION A
* Twitter allows you to send short messages, much like you do on a mobile phone.
* BUT you don't send the messages to anyone in particular. They go
out into the ether
* IF someone is interested in your messages they will get it. If not
it will stay unnoticed forever (very sad)
* There a two ways (four really) someone may get your message. They
may FOLLOW you as a person - and get all your messages.
* MORE INTERESTINGLY or, they may search all of twitter for messages
(tweets) marked with a particular subject. So if you're interested in
everything to do with London you might search for messages that the
user has tagged as #london. In our case - it's #traumaorg. All
tweets tagged with #traumaorg will also now appear on the TRAUMA.ORG
homepage.
* You can embed links to web pages into the tweets so users can jump
to more in-depth content
* You can also link pictures & even video

2. EXPLANATION B
* It's impossible to explain. Just sign up for Twitter and try it.
* Dowloading a desktop application like Tweetdeck also helps immensely

So what's it useful for in respect to Trauma????

Well in truth I have no idea, but I think it's worth experimenting
with as a new layer of communication for the global trauma care
community.  Here are some thoughts/possibilities:

* Real-time publicising of events/conferences/happenings
* Informing the wider community of proceedings at conferences
* Information dissemination during disasters
* Impromptu case discussion/advice
* Updating new content on Trauma.org and other trauma sites
* Broadcasting new educational/otherwise finds on the Internet
* Broadcasting new/important publications
* ???other???

You may also wish to follow @TRAUMA_ORG
And if you're really interested @karimbrohi

Please feel very free to experiment and remember #traumaorg for
anything trauma related

Karim
