Fresh whole blood

I believe that I have mentioned on a number of occasions that much of the
world, if not most, functions on the basis of whole fresh blood. Especially
in countries that cannot afford the technology necessary for components, and
I'm not speaking only of "bush hospitals".

Whole blood, as fresh as possible, is standard procedure in hospitals of the
International Committee of the Red Cross. The problem of supply is really
one of culture. In some countries, donors are so numerous that we have to
turn them away. In others, we have to negotiate with family, clan and tribe
to obtain just a unit or two. Result: very strict guidelines on blood
transfusion.

The details are in our new book: War Surgery: working with limited
resources.

bloody cheers all,
