And then carefully and thoroughly retract this Glennbeckian extrapolation before it breeds pointless alarmism and potential harm. Sorry, Dr. Mattox; you usually earn my faith and trust. But this is bordering on wacky. Pret Bjorn, RN Bangor, ME USA ---------- Original Message ---------- From: KMATTOX at aol.com To: trauma-list at trauma.org Subject: CT Excessive Radiation - Cedar Sinai Hospital Date: Tue, 13 Oct 2009 18:54:01 EDT Big News on the Evening News Channels today (Tuesday) is huge overdoses from CT scanners used in a diagnostic mode at the Los Angeles Cedar Sinai Hospital. It was in stroke patients, but the regulatory agencies are going to be looking at the dosing of radiation from CT scanners all over the country, including trauma. They will also be looking at specific indications. A word to the wise is in order. For any patient in whom you order a CT scan, be sure there is a progress note stipulating the specific indication for the CT scan, what you anticipate finding, and how any finding (positive or negative) will affect your treatment and the outcome of your patient. If you cannot write such a note, CANCEL your order for a CT scan. By some projections, more than 80% of CT scans are ordered unnecessarily and that up to 30% of CT scans have led to VOMITs or have dubious and less than helpful reports, that have language to over protect the person dictating the report.
