Recognition for (Peace) Performance

Gross, Ronald Ronald.Gross at baystatehealth.org
Mon Oct 12 18:00:08 BST 2009

I too have been silent on the issue (surprising to some, I would imagine). I think that it is truly too bad people can't get rewarded for what they promise to do, or what they would like to see happen on their watch. Were that to be the way that life worked, we would all be highly rewarded on a daily basis. Unfortunately, we are only recognized and/or rewarded for what we have accomplished, and not for the promises we offer or represent. As such, the awarding of a Nobel Peace prize to one who, according to some, represents much, but in reality has accomplished very little, if anything, with regard to furthering world peace (other than his desire to make the world a better place to live) has regrettably and inadvertently demeaned all of those who have or will receive what was previously regarded as the pinnacle of success, given to those whose life long achievements were to be recognized.

This subject was origionally the Peace Prize Award to President Obama. I initially recused myself as I had nothing to discuss and nothing to add. I am aware that some doctors have made MAJOR medical contributions and have never been recognized. I do believe that any prize or recognition of this stature Must be quality and awarded for sentinal contributions in keeping with the subject of the award. Clearly political and emotional overtones seem obvious to even a casual observer and bias is assumed by this writer. I am therefore critical of the selection committee for their apparent flawed process. I could easilly give logic why at this time this recipient should have either not been selected or should have been declined. But what has happened, has happened. I do believe that some of the selection of the Nobel committee in recent years has weakened the symbolism of the award.

I do not mean to imply you want accolades or awards, but with all the
medical proffesionals here, it would have been better to award the Nobel
prize to any or all of you than the recipient who did receive the award for
nothing.
