A year or so ago, when I last updated one of my talks, I found the following UN rankings for annual firearm murder rates per 1000 people:


1. South Africa 0.72
2. Columbia 0.51
3. Thailand 0.31
4. Zimbabwe 0.049

 

 

8. USA 0.028

 

And all the way down to number 17 (Portugal 0.008), the USA is the ONLY Western country on the list!

 

19. Switzerland 0.0053
20. Canada 0.005

 

31. New Zealand 0.0017 (i.e. 16 times less common than in the USA)

 

I think he meant "your part of the world" at far less than a hemispheric scale
