Actually none of the 'recent changes' are recent. Plasma was used very
successfully in WWII. Even when I was a resident in the late 1960's
whole blood was very effective for trauma managements. The 'recent
changes' have been a return to as close as possible to WHOLE BLOOD of
the 1960's.

In the early 1970's the pharmaceutical industry took Whole blood, broke
down into components and sold it back to us in parts for more money.

Norman McSwain MD

Hear, hear Norman. Some parts of the world have managed to escape THE
industry; only whole blood is available, no components. In ICRC
hospitals for war trauma, only whole blood, as fresh as possible, is
available. We have been reading with interest the experience of our
American colleagues in Iraq and Afghanistan and the "re-discovery" of
what was standard practice not so long ago.
