I've missed some of the recent conversation, so forgive me if this issue has already been discussed, but has anybody seen the article in the current issue of New Yorker magazine about how physicians themselves exert a powerful influence on health care costs? http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/06/01/090601fa_fact_gawande?yrail The author, a surgeon, compares the physician culture of McAllen, Texas, which has the highest per-capita Medicare costs in the country, with El Paso, Texas, where per capita Medicare costs are half as high despite comparable population characteristics and community health. It's a perspective I've never seen before. JIM ________________________________
