Causes and fixes for road traffic accidents

In road traffic accidents, driver error is the primary cause about 90-95% of the time, depending on which study you look at. In car-vs-motorcycle crashes, it's due to car driver error about two-thirds of the time because the car drivers don't see the motorcycle coming and violate its right-of-way. However, driver training or retraining shows almost no benefit, or only transient benefits, in reducing accidents among those who receive training. You can spend a lot of money on driver training but you'll get little or no bang for your buck. Sorry. The failure of drivers to benefit from training is the reason the government and car companies have been investing in ITS -- intelligent transportation systems that would either alert drivers to impending threats or, ultimately, do the driving for you -- sort of like Otto Pilot on airplanes.
