Cyber interferrence - Theory regarding Air France flight - somewhat off topic

First of all, just to specify: Electromagnetic pulse happens when a
strong electromagnetic radiation hits a target and is converted into
electricity, frying all electronic devices (both connected and
unconnected to the grid. Lightning on the other hand is not the same as
an emp, although the end result is the same if your toaster gets a
direct hit, with lightning the there is little em radiation, but a
strong current beeing transported. Lightning CAN in the worst case
scenario cause a massive blackout (will have to hit a weak spot, then
travel up to other weak spots in the grid, causing a cascade), but it
will never cover the extreme areas a well placed EMP can. It will also
never involve the massive destruction of electrical appliances and
electronics an EMP is capable of. EMP WILL cause a massive blackout,
and less than five high altitude nukes is enough to make the Us. go
offline. For many months.

Current ways of creating an EMP involves
a) High altitude detonation of a nuclear weapon, where the high
altitude/thin air results in most of the energy released going to em
radiation, and not heat.
b) A massive capacitator bank connected to a large aerial (current
testing models have a very limited range, 100-300 yards at most) or
c) an explosive driven flux generator (which is currently beeing
researched by the Us. and probably by the russians, north korea and
whoever else with the massive budget to fund it). Very technical, very
complex.

Your theory about emp causing this aircrash is unfeasible at best. A) no
high altitude nukes fired b)getting the 50tons+ of capacitors into the
vincinity of the airbus would require an antonov or a c5 galaxy
airplane, which then would be lost and c) no reports of a practical
version of an explosively driven flux generator in existance (unless you
believe some rumours about the bombing of iraq). The end result of the
investigation (if they find the orange box and enough clues) will most
likely be pilot error or technical/mechanical failure (the two most
common causes of planecrashes).

Prepairing for an EMP attack on Us. soil is so bloody expensive that
there is no way to get EMP protection in anything else than the
extremely vital (think military and the pres.) spots. You have to build
a faraday cage around your whole house, hospital, firehouse and so on.
Your medical electronics will be several times bigger, far less
sophistcated, and will cost a lot more. Not very feasible, and not many
ways for medical/trauma professionals to train/prepare for it (unless
you have a fondness for breeding carrier pigeons) On the other hand,
there are lots of other methods that terrorists use to kill
people/cripple society that WE CAN train for and protect ourselves
against. Explosions, anthrax, nerve gases, dirty bombs and so on.
These are actually areas where continuously training ourselves and the
public will make a big difference if crap hits the fan. My point is:
why bother with EMP (where there is not much that can be done) instead
of protecting ourselves against threats that are far more likely to
occur (any dimwit with enough money can make a bomb or nerve gas
nowadays).

And please. Cyberwar/cyberterrorism involves a party using coordinated
electronic communcation (the internet) to initiate an attack on an
enemy, and has nothing to do with EMP (think more about russian geekboys
DDOSing Estonia and Georgia than someone with an EMP device taking out
our grid). It involves people using computers to attack the computers
the enemy use to control communications, the electrical grid and so on.
The practical version of emp for the time beeing involves a state (no
terrorist group will ever have the budget/manpower to do it) building a
10+ kt nuke, then building a high altitude atmospheric rocket, and then
managing to shoot it uninterrupted halfway across the globe at the Us.
Even though electronic communication will be the biggest hit, it is
terror or warfare, not cyberterror or cyberwarfare.
