trauma response within the hospital

To some, Dr. McSwain's post may seem odd if you're imagining a victim  
only 40 or 50 yards from your door. But after studying this in some  
detail, I totally agree. There was a famous case that I'm sure you can  
read about on line at Ravenswood Hospital in Chicago. Because of the  
public outrage over how this incident was handled they actually  
changed the CFD EMS protocols in Chicago so if some hospital DID rush  
out and bring in some victim out of (?misplaced?) compassion, they  
could get EMS to respond to the rescuing hospital like it was an  
emergency. Without something like that in place, you're doing the  
victim more harm than good if you'r not a trauma center. Even if you  
are a trauma center, as Dr. McSwain points out, you risk doing harm.  
And if you intend on rescuing people, you'd better be pretty clear  
about who, when and where and practice it fairly often.
