The one thing that bears continual repeating is that the Feds (collectively) are not suppose to be the end all be all everything to everyone all the time go to guys. That's Civics 101 stuff. Responding to natural and man made disasters is not a Federal only deal. The mistakes, screw ups and other "ups" are found at all levels of government and dare I say even the private sector and dare I even say the "semi private sector" where many hospitals and other components of the US health care system really fall. Everything can and hopefully will be improved. Louis N. Dr. Mattox passionately suggests agencies are insular (silos). Are the silos that he refers to local, regional or federal, or all? What is the best way to address his concerns? Shouldn¹t such efforts start locally since most disasters do not involve a federal response? What suggestions do you have to improve coordination? Under the NRF, the annex ESF#8 calls for HHS to respond to support healthcare needs. HHS dispatches healthcare facility assessment teams. In disaster management, there is a need for effective communications and coordination with local and regional community representatives. It sounds like there is a need for trauma physicians to become actively involved. Where do you think should such inputs be heard? The website below contains a description of the extensive scope of the federal government¹s HHS role for the response to Ike. ³Hurricane Ike: What the Government Is Doing² can be retrieved from http://www.dhs.gov/xprepresp/editorial_0846.shtm Richard Besserman -- trauma-list : TRAUMA.ORG To change your settings or unsubscribe visit: http://www.trauma.org/index.php?/community/ Sent via BlackBerry by AT&T
