Ken, my friend

The winds here are up to 69 mph (gusts); surge is up to 20 ft; most public schools are closed in 5 parish area; airport temporarily closed (may be permanant) and we are not even in the pathway. It has a tremendous power. You have prayers and thoughts from a Gustav survivor

I still worry about up to 100 deAths from sea surg drownings due to un evacuating people in the shrimp fleet. Fortunately the storm has not beCome a cat 3 or 4. Thx for everypnes thoughts. This is very prudent and forward-thinking. Congratulations to your staff for taking bold action in the interests of your patients, your community, and yourselves.

Hunker down, Galveston, and best of luck. Hopefully Dr. Mattox will find a safe place from which to Blackberry the details as they unfold. May they be boring.

This morning, we are evacuating all patients from the Shriners Hospital for Children-Galveston (11 inpatients, approx. 45 ambulatory burn patients) and the University of Texas Medical Branch (260 patients) as the projected path of Hurricaine Ike has turned. We expect to see hurricaine force winds and storm surges over Galveston island and this area of the Texas Coast, including low lying areas near Houston. This is obviously a major undertaking on short notice and hopefully full evacuation will be accomplished in under 24 hours from the decision to do so.

Thanks to our colleagues in Cincinnati, Shreveport, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio for opening their doors to these patients.

Please keep the physicians, staff, families, and most importantly our patients in your hearts and prayers on this 9-11 anniversary.

Mary Foster Lumpkin, MD
