Every generation of every culture (surely including medicine) wonders "what's the matter with kids these days?" Speaking only for myself: I've been around long enough to have observed at least a comparable level of self-pity and self-importance (very rare, let's be truthful; but inherently conspicuous) coming out of close to thirty consecutive graduating classes. In my experience, the phenomenon must be either easily correctible or self-limiting: call me Pollyanna, but I truly believe that the doctors I get to hang out with -- new and old -- are mostly better doctors, coworkers, and citizens with each passing year. Nurses, too. A completely unhelpful non-answer, I know. Typical. Once I engaged them in a direct way with some special attention, they responded much better. It was an eye opener. I am interested in your recommendations on how to inspire and work with this group. We are revamping our orientation and communication strategy. "Old school" approaches do not work. Once engaged, I find them to be oustanding young physicians. But I bet you're not finding it so. Though of course taking the math literally would mean you're only seeing PGY2s with this syndrome, but I know what you mean. Obviously this is a continuum. I think my wife feels this way about her attendings, lol. The article starts on the front page of the Personal Journal section. We have noticed the attitudes described in the article among our residents, particularly those born after 1980. We are strategizing on how to best teach, inspire, manage, etc. this very challenging group from whom must come the next generation of surgeons. It makes the role of a teaching surgeon even more difficult in the setting of restricted hours and the other major challenges of modern trauma and critical care. Who among you has found successful tactics in creating the strategy to deal with this challenge?
