Not sure how I feel being listed in the same sentence as "high school aged "shadowers". Having said that, RT is a very functional part of the trauma team at our institution, assisting with all airway management, resuscitation and critical care transport. We have very specific personnel assignments, and responsibilities. We use a system where all communications regarding the primary survey are funneled through the "microphone" who is a person specifically tasked with relaying this information to the trauma chief and recorder in a reasonable tone of voice. This minimizes "noise" and confusion. As the secondary survey commences, and some of the non-essential people start to leave, depending on the severity of injury etc. this becomes even more manageable. Now, I can tell you that this doesn't always work the way it is designed. We have our moments as well. We are a teaching level one center, so we have our share of students of every shape and variety. At times we do have to send people packing, while remembering and being tolerant of the fact that we have a responsibility to teach. Overall this system works well for us, and is ever evolving. Maybe some of the lurkers on this list from my institution could comment. Keith Keith D.
