Maryland Air Ambulance Review Panel

If you use ACS mechanism of injury (MOI) alone as a transport criteria,
about 40-50% will go home from the hospital in 6 hours. It is my
understanding that this was the standard before the last crash in
Maryland. I do not know if this has changed or not. This is word of
mouth not written that I have seen.

The data comes from our own trauma registry pre-Katrina. We only used
MOI as transport to the trauma center in our own parish.

Now all MOI goes to closest hospital. We take only physiologic and
anatomic ACS criteria in the trauma center from Orleans and the
surrounding parishes. We take hospital to hospital transfer from the ED
that have severe injuries after physician assessment. This is ground
and aeromedical transport

It works well for us.

This kind of scenerio happens far too often, including some of the
patients
that are now dead in air ambulance air crashes.

Yes they are.

A man wrecked his 4 wheeler. Walked A MILE to get back to his camp
without
difficulty.

Local EMS arrived and called for a helicopter. Patient awake and alert
with
a scalp laceration with controlled bleeding.

Flown to a non trauma center, stitched up and dc'd.

There was another non trauma center hospital just about 5 miles away he
could have gone to with same outcome.
