New cadaver-based method for penetrating trauma training?

Yes, I was approached by one of the guys from PETA this past week about instructing at this.  I was asked to create a traumatic injury similar as to what we might do in the ATOM course on the pig.  Their obvious goal is to do away with animal experimentation and use this as a replacement.  Our conversation centered mostly around the use of animals in the ATOM course.  You might notice that Terence O'Keefe (Tucson) will be one of the instructors.  I am actually curious about the technology, but not sure of it's utility in the ATOM course.

‘Living Cadaver’ Surgical Skills Training Demonstration and
Workshop

Anatomy Gifts Registry Bio Skills
Lab

Glen
Burnie, Md.

Saturday, January 31,
2009

Dr. Emad Aboud, a neurosurgeon at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, has
developed a new model that uses human or animal cadavers to replace the use of
live anesthetized animals for surgical training. A perfect laboratory training
model is one that can accurately mimic the experience of actual surgery in the
same ana
tomy—the closer to live surgery the model is, the greater the benefit.
The lack of an accurate vascular model has sometimes resulted in the use of
live-animal models, when bleeding and vascular-liquid filling is desired.

This event is designed as an interactive workshop using
Dr. Aboud’s perfused cadaver method for surgical training. In Dr. Aboud’s
method, a mechanical pump, artificial blood reservoirs, a pressure mechanism,
and a tubing system are connected to a cadaveric specimen through its major
vessels. The device pumps artificial blood into the vessels of the specimen and
applies pulsation to the arteries. This provides a perfect simulation of live
surgery in terms of anatomy, bleeding, pulsation, soft oozing tissue, and, in
the case of head and spine specimens, cerebrospinal fluid simulation.

The following procedures will be demonstrated by experts
in their respective fields: penetrating torso trauma repair, military injury
management techniques, micro-neurosurgical techniques, and device implantation.
There will be an opportunity for workshop participants to engage in hands-on
learning.
