Well, I cannot answer why we have so many properties lost in Southern California, but understand that we are in the midst of a drought and if you stare at a bush too long on a hot dry windy day, it seems like it will burst into flames! Might I just add some enlightenment to the disaster in LA. I work in the ER at Olive View/UCLA Medical Center, the hospital that was in the middle of the recent fires..Although I was not working the night of the fires, returning to work today all of our night shift staff was relaying stories of power failures, hand bagging of critical patients for hours while the fires were burning litterally up to the doors of the hospital, staff evacuating critical patients on back boards being carried down multiple flights of stairs. I talked with one nurse who was running down the stairs with a NICU patient in her arms trying to catch up to the transport team that wanted to leave because they felt that it wasn't safe to remain at the facility (probably wasn't). We lost many out buildings on our beautiful campus. It has been serving the needs of LA County since the 1920's and many of the buildings that housed those original TB patients were either damaged or completely destroyed in the fire. I know this is not the place to say this, but I would like to say thank you to the LA Fire Department for saving our hospital, to the staff of Olive View for working in the most adverse conditions that I could only imagine with courage, and distinction and to the surrounding hospitals for accepting our patients in a time of urgency. One possibility you omitted is the disgruntled homeowners and the unemployed here in CA might have reason to start and or burn areas of successful Californians. The ones to survive the financial holocost here are more likely to be in medical fields; meaning RN's and Respiratory Therapists and others. Most of the eastern settlers or Southern California have already been through the fires. What is very depressing is the fact that on any given day you can count on seeing an abandoned home to bank repossession of one on each block as you drive to work. But, as you suspect, it's NOT likely to be the main factor and nowhere near the only one. Other things probably worth consideration are that houses are probably built a lot closer to vegetation in CA. I don't KNOW this, but I expect it - 'cause it would look nicer! > >You have wind direction/strength to consider - I am not sure what these are like in the relevant areas in Oz. > >I guess you also need to consider materials of construction - wood-frame houses are more susceptible to external-source fires than are brick/stone houses... I think they use a lot of wood in US construction - what is it like in Oz? > >Of course, when you say "so much" loss of property, you have to begin with how much property is there to begin with - I suspect you'll find many more houses and more expensive ones built in these areas in CA than in the ones in Oz... >_________________________________________________________________ >See the most popular videos on the web >http://clk.atdmt.com/GBL/go/115454061/direct/01/ >-- >trauma-list : TRAUMA.ORG >To change your settings or unsubscribe visit: >http://www.trauma.org/index.php?/community/ -- trauma-list : TRAUMA.ORG To change your settings or unsubscribe visit: http://www.trauma.org/index.php?/community/
