I watch with interest each year as the US have these devestating fires with so much loss of property. Here in Australia we are also subject to pretty fierce fires, but it seems, without the comparative loss of property. In the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, where I live, we have seen some big fires which have involved Fire Services from other States being bought in to assist our local efforts - specifically the Christmas of 2001/2002 and again at Christmas 2002/2003. From a Health perspective, we learned lots of lesson from the 2001 fires and have put plans in place which were put into action in 2002 and proved successful. I have since presented "The Health Response to Bushfires in the Blue Mountains" at two conferences and have had interest from Emergency Management personnel from New Zealand and Canberra. However... this post is not about how great our Area Health Service is in its planning, but just a question about why so much loss of property occurs year after year in the US. I suspect it may have something to do with Prevention and Preparedness, but I am interested to know for sure - not just suspect. Discussion off line is welcome, as this subject is aside from the trauma focus of the group.
