FINAL reply from AAPA re: eACLS endorsement

Charlene
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you about this issue. As a follow-up
to my earlier response regarding the eACLS course offered by the American
College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), let me reiterate that the course is
not approved by the American Heart Association (AHA) per se ... in fact, one
could characterize it as a "competitor" to AHA's ACLS program. The eACLS
course was developed by ACEP and is approved for ACEP, AMA, and AAPA CME
credit. This course is used by physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and
paramedics in locations nationwide. It is a recognized credential by some
hospitals, while others may only use AHA, ASHI, or their own internal
training
for such skills. Some institutions ONLY use the ACEP course.
The Joint Commission does not specify "AHA-approved training" for its
accredited institutions. It states that in regard to accreditation,
personnel responding to a code situation in a hospital need to be trained
according to the most current ECC guidelines derived from empirical
evidence. The ACEP program does meet these guidelines in all aspects.
ACEP continues its efforts to expand the awareness and recognition of the
eACLS program, but it is true that individual PAs should check with their
own institutions in advance to determine if this credential meets that
institution's requirements.
To suggest that AAPA is supporting this program only for financial reasons
(as one posting stated) is not acccurate. As I said before, we stand by our
involvement with the program and we recently offered a blended learning
course at our national conference in San Antonio that was well received and
very successful.
Thanks,
Greg
