Civilian use of hemostatic agents

Stephen,

Although not pre-hospital, in our emergency department at MIHS I brought in one chitin product, however, no one was satisfied with the results from the samples that we obtained which was disappointing for me as I had to fight to get it in here and since it had been used in the current conflict. However, I have had a lot more interest by the physicians with Celox powder which did a much better job and does not have the exothermic reaction that causes the tissue damage as some others we have heard about in the literature. So, we will be reordering Celox. There was a potato based hemostatic product that one pre-hospital agency stopped using because of lack of clinical efficacy.

Now, at the Las Vegas meeting, I stopped by a vendor that was promoting the next generation of Chitin-like products to come out but was not FDA approved yet that according to their testing is even better at stopping bleeding tissue. We will bring that in as well if it shows promise for comparison.

If you would like to know more about our experience, please feel free to e-mail me off-line at

Thanks,

MRM

Subject: Civilian use of hemostatic agents

I am looking for incidents in which hemostatic agents were used in the civilian pre-hospital setting to control severe bleeding. Any response either positive or negative would be appreciated.
