Dave,

There is NO, repeat NO data and no real study that supports this sort of treatment. As I understand it, they are experimenting with this at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, funded by the fund started by Nick Buoniconti, Marc's brother and Nick Sr's son. In talking to one of the neurosurgeons here (one that can take care of me any day!) he discounts the hypothermia as bunk - and feels that the player in question probably had a central cord syndrome that would have gotten better regardless of what was done!

Take care,
Ron

Im sure that most of us on the list have seen the footage of the NFL player that suffered a spinal cord injury last sunday. I was watching ESPN news last nite and they had a (i believe) a physician that described hypothermic therepy to reduce the amount of swelling on spinal cord. Is this becoming a more accpeted therepy for spinal cord injuries? is there a time frame in which the maxium benefits can be achieved? If this therepy is being used what are the protocols? i believe that Mass General Hospital is using this therepy for post cardiac arrest patients.
