Respectfully, today is also a day of reflection upon the US image and
actions in other countries from before 2001 until now. We were shaken awake
after the September 11th attacks and have since become more vigilant to our
nation's safety since that sentinel event on our own soil.

The twin towers-- the bastion of finance, was destroyed, but so was a large
section of the Pentagon and a certain Pennsylvania field. Several airliners
also were decimated--  which resulted in a downturn of American travel and
increase of sometimes ridiculous security measures. (14" Knitting needles:
yes? My 2 inch swiss army knife: no?) Helath concerns of the workers have
been back-burnered while some survivor families received million dollar
settlements that were squandered.

Innocents were killed, but the message was clear. We were hated enough for a
group of people to plan and carry out the destruction and murder of
thousands of US as well as foreign citizens.

As in all disasters, the true measure of our strength is what we now do.
