We have a patient with a severe head injury and pelvic fractures  who had
an IVC filter inserted post confirmation of a right calf DVT  (proven on
U/S).

The filter was inserted 10 days post injury and has  been insitu for 14
days.

Is there any evidence based  practice/guidelines on the timing of removal
of the IVC filter with a known  DVT??

If there is any protocol available that would be appreciated  also.

i am not aware of any evidence that shows that temporary,movable or  
removable filters are superior to permanent filters in such patients.

the furation that the filters can stay in situ is variable depending upon  
design. Some, with broadly placed metal in touch with intima incorporate quite  
early and are adherent and imovable within two weeks or less. The one with the 
 longest dwell time is not longer marketable as a removable filter in the  us.
