Dear Falco, As far as I know the only AIS code for any aspiration is for "Smoke inhalation" associated (sometimes) with burn injuries. If a traumatic injury does not have an AIS code (Abbreviated Injury Scale) it will not play a role in the ISS (injury severity score). So, if the poor girl fell into a canal filled with canal water (before or after she broke her femur), and then accidentally aspirated the disgusting fluid or even drowned!! she will probably receive an AIS severity of 3 for the femur and that's all. Total ISS will be, therefore =9 if she has no other injury. We input all patients in the traumadatabase, including trauma severity scores. Does anybody know IF and (when yes) HOW aspiration is codes in the Injury Severity Score or in a variation on this score?
