"It makes me think that Trauma is a chronic illness and should be treated like diabetes and heart disease." Of course Trauma is a chronic recurrent disease. Many Trauma providers came to this conclusion a couple decades ago. And we made the analogy of only treating dka or crushing chest pain with some insulin or nitro and then discharging the patient. No one would feel the treatment would be adequate or reasonable and no one would be surprised when the patient returned with more serious problems. And so when some kid shows up shot in the calf it's a big deal, a life threatening event. Trauma/violence prevention is very hard work. Providers have an important role to play but I agree with Dr. Benson that this work is more competently done by communities in communities. Rob Smith
