Ian, I am certainly no expert, but as I see it, the bilateral incision (ie extension of the lt thoracotomy across the sternum to the right) gives you much better visualization of the entire heart, and enables you to perform open compressions more easily while doing whatever the repair de jour you need to do. JMHO, Ron >>> "Ian Seppelt" <SeppelI at wahs.nsw.gov.au> 5/2/2007 3:54 AM >>> We've been through this before, but could an expert surgeon please explain specifically the pros and cons of left anterolateral thoracotomy versus bilateral clamshell thoracotomy. Thanks, Ian Ian Seppelt FANZCA FJFICM Senior Staff Specialist Dept of Intensive Care Medicine The Nepean Hospital, PO Box 63 Penrith NSW 2751 Director of Clinical Research, Sydney West AHS Clinical Lecturer, University of Sydney ###################################################################### Attention: This message is intended for the addresses named and may contain confidential information.
