Massive transfusion protocol

In the ICRC we are the "poor cousins". No blood products, only whole blood,
as fresh as possible. The community, family and friends are usually the
donors. Clinical picture more than laboratory results determines need for
blood transfusion. In most circumstances of Third World wars, at 6 units the
patient is usually triaged Category IV (black), supportive treatment only
and allowed to die with dignity.
