Hi all,

I apologise for sending such a blanket email, but I have to do it once.  If
you have no idea who I am, please send me an email simply saying "REMOVE"
and delete this mail without guilt - you've crept into my address book
somehow.

As many of you will know, I have been selected to go to Antarctica in
December as the expedition doctor for the 47th South African National
Antarctic Expedition.  This expedition will last for a bit more than a year,
with our return in February 2009.  During this time we will be resident at
the SANAE IV base in Dronning Maud Land, near the coastline of Antarctica
closest to South Africa.  I look forward to this incredible, challenging but
daunting experience.  Part of the great challenge is the relative isolation
- for about 10 months we will be only 10 people at the base, with the
nearest humans more than 200km away - about 14 hours travel in subzero
conditions, if a safe route even existed.  The base, however, is equipped
with a satellite connection allowing email and telephone calls.  To this
end, I'm creating an email list to contact you, my friends and family, and
keep you informed about the expedition and life on the ice.  I also hope it
will generate some responses, to alleviate the isolation.

If you would like to receive haphazard emails from me during the expedition
(starting now, in the preparation phase), please send me a positive response
to this email.  I will count no refusal as positive!  If you would prefer
not, please simply email me with the word "REMOVE", and I shall not hassle
you further.  If you know of anyone who may be interested in receiving these
messages, please feel free to forward this on to them.
