What did you think of Dr. Carmona's testimony?

I am PROUD to state as publicly as possible, that I find Dr. Richard
Carmona's testimony, and his subsequent interview on CNN, his most important moment
and statements while he was in government service. He demonstrated great
courage and leadership. Do not overlook, that two other previous surgeons
general of great reputation, Dr. Koop, and Dr. Satcher also made similar
statements and stood beside Dr. Carmona during his comments.

Statements regarding WHY I am so supportive can be made in much greater
detail if the members of this list are interested. We must not politicize the
MD degree and responsibilities of physicians in government service. We in
health care are NOT to merely let our MD degrees to be used by government for
political purposes. Some nations have attempted to do that during the last
century and the world soundly condemned the actions. Recall the tremendous
back lash when one government official in the United States 2 years ago merely
ordered a doctor to put a feeding tube (back) in a brain damaged patient,
against the next of kin's will. Military, public health, and governmental
doctors have a higher responsibility than to merely make their political boss
look good. They also have an opportunity and responsibility to represent the
latest evidence based biomedical science in educating not only their
governmental boss, but all in government.

And the principles and values go much deeper than that. They go to the
very root and basis of our guild, called the practice of medicine.

Dr. Carmona made me PROUD to be a doctor. Thank you, Richard Carmona for
standing up to what is right. Now we must do the same thing in areas of
health care reform, health care economics, health care regulation, and many other
non guild intrusions into the practice of medicine.
