I'm with you all the way Dr. Mattox.  I've not seen this done, but it doesn't surprise me either.  We reserve the IVC filters for those in whom anticoagulation is contraindicated or otherwise not feasible.  
 
I routinely see orthopods put pts on ASA and "low dose" coumadin for DVT prophylaxis when the pt is sent home!  Hell, if they're at that big of risk, they deserve LMWH at home not to mention the fact that neither should prevent a DVT, from what I know of Virchow's triad.
