I like Dr. Sise's comments. When I realized that acute care surgery with a trauma interest was my genetic fate in life, I took an extra two years to complete a thoracic surgery residency. My general surgery residency prepared me for a career in vascular surgery better than current day vascular fellowships. I had spent a great deal of time developing the discipline of emergency medicine in my early years. Thus, I felt very well prepared to take care of anything that came through the door. In the areas where I did not receive training, I do not and have not pretended to be able to give the patient a good outcome - orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery and I really would rather others take care of burns, and in my area of the country there are three centers that really want all the burn patients we can send them.
