Your shrewdness is only exceeded by your generosity. MJS ________________________________ From: Karim Brohi [mailto:karim at trauma.org] Sent: Sat 2/3/2007 7:06 AM To: 'Trauma & Critical Care mailing list' Subject: Funding Trauma.org The recent offers of donations for Trauma.org are very generous, and I am aware that the critical care medicine email list is funded in this manner. However I am not convinced this is the model we want to follow (I could be wrong). I say this though because I don't believe this is a solid financial model and Trauma.org has become such a resource that its funding needs to be consistent and reliable. Its true that if all 2700+ members of the list gave $10-20, we'd have $30-50,000 a year, but fundamentally the list and website have always been free resources, and whether optional or not, this has been the part of the reason for its success. Further, I have a feeling that the proportion of people who actually donate will probably reflect the proportion of people who post. With the new server it's going to cost us around $9000/year to meet running costs for the website, mailing list and other services we have running. Currently around half of this is met by a grant from the British Trauma Society (and in return we host their website, take new membership registrations etc). The new site development costs, at around $6000 have been met by a charitable donation (the donor organisation wishes to remain anonymous, but I am indebted to them in many ways). Further developments we need to generate further funding for. We have always been a not-for-profit organisation. We are not yet officially registered as a charity in the UK, although I have been taking advice as to whether this is actually the best model for us. Actually, there seems to be very little in the way of good advice for non-profit finances out there. I have a few ideas for funding models that I have been playing with - but I'd be interested in hearing the list's thoughts on possibilities. Whatever happens, we have ways of carrying on :-) Karim -----Original Message----- From: trauma-list-bounces at trauma.org [mailto:trauma-list-bounces at trauma.org] On Behalf Of Phil Hoffman Sent: 01 February 2007 17:21 To: 'Trauma & Critical Care mailing list' Subject: RE: Overload!! I was thinking along the same lines as Dr. Mattox. I will give up one Friday night's beer, billiards and pretzels and send $50 (hey, I like expensive beer...). I'll bet that Dr. Mattox and others would join me in making this a quarterly confirmation of the value of this list and the site itself. Can we (MEMBERS OF THIS LIST SERVER) help by depositing money into Pay Pal account for you and send supportive MONEY. I am happy to deposit $100.00 this moment, if you will give me the number or name of the account to send it to.
