Transmediastinal GSW: to the underqualified

i WILL TRY AGAIN

At our institution, angiography is used frequently to diagnose and treat a
variety of injuries. We have done so since 1977 with enthusiastic support from
our trauma surgical colleagues.

Many times when I have expressed my opinions about interventional radiology's
timeliness, safety, efficiency and success I am met with comments regarding
hesitant (at best) to obstructive radiologists, about the long time it takes to
get patients to the angio suite, etc. I have had my share of junior faculty
who joined my staff after being trained at institutions that have taught that
there was really NO indication for EMERGENCY ANGIOGRAPHY in trauma. After all,
"if that patient is so sick they should go to the OR, if they are not that
sick it can wait until the morning"

In my last email on this subject I asked the group to describe impediments to
and innovations for timeliness of emergency angiography. My goal was to hear
the impediments and see if the practices at our and others' hospitals that
employ angiography has any lessons for those who are down on its use.

This surely is a question that all who practice trauma can comment on.
